Origins of Tamboo
Bamboo Tamboo originates for the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago and was the precurser to playing music on steel pans.
The Caribbean had a high population of West African Slaves, who expressed their Culture and religion through musical celebrations where they often played on the Djembe drum, tamboo instruments, bongos, and other drums.
During the slave revolutions, the British High Commission in the Caribbean banned the use of all skinned instruments.
While under oppression, the African race improvised new instruments to express themselves rhythmically and musically.
On Trinidad and Tobago bamboo was cut into varying lengths to give different sounds. These cultural and political conditions gave birth to a deeply rich music steeped in freedoms song and played on bamboo instruments. The new sound was called Tamboo!
Tamboo comes from the French word Tambour, meaning drum.
So Bamboo Tamboo means literally ‘Bamboo Drum.’
The sticks used to hit the Bamboo were often sharpened to a sharp point and were used as weapons between rival gangs, so Bamboo Tamboo was eventually outlawed in Africa. Rastafarian’s carried the music to the USA and it survives to day within the mecca of musical genius and freedom. From the roots of Bob Marley and the Whalers, to the Caribean Clubs and Tamboo Bistro’s, the rich culture of tamboo music thrives and brings with it a style of dance and movement that is enriching and free. Tamboo music elevates the spirit of freedom, joy, consciousness, creativity, fun, happiness, and passion.
An amazing observation that is common amongst lovers of Tamboo music is that gorgeous women seem to accompany the music. The particular tamboo sounds bring roots and culture that when combined with the palms trees, beaches, and club life seems to attract the most beautiful women in the world.
